Critical Studies: Giuseppe Arcimboldo

Giuseppe Arcimboldo (also spelled Arcimboldi) was born in 1527 and lived until July 11th, 1593.

He was an Italian painter best known for creating imaginative portrait heads made entirely of objects such as, fruits, vegetables, flowers, fish and books.

His portraits of human heads were greatly admired by his contemporaries and remain a source of fascination today.

Art critics often debate whether Arcimboldo's paintings were created just for fun or as the product of a deranged mind.

However given the Renaissance fascination with riddles, puzzles and the bizarre, arcimboldo, far from being mentally imbalanced, catered to the taste of his times.

What do you think of Arcimboldo's artworks? Do you like them or really hate them.

Remember to give your own opinion. It is important so you need to use it and give reasons behind why you think this way.

I like his work because all the vegtables fit in really nicely and acctally make it look like a face. I love the fact that he has used more than one vegatable and used them in different ways. This style is really unique and thje idea was very clever.

I think his artwork is very unique and is very creative and shows that different shapes and images can create a reqigniseable image such as a face in this case so for that reason I like it.

This artwork is very strange and colourful. Giuseppe has used fruit, flowers and vegetables to create a person which is a unique idea. I think it is an unusual way to make art but many people like it for it's individuality.

I really like this peice of artwork because it is extremely original and the artist has gave himself a unique publicity! (People can recognise his artwork). Using fruit and vegetables and other natural stuff to make a face is just amazing! :)

I really like this piece of artwork because its very different and unique. At first it looks like a face but when you look closer you can see its made out of many different fruits and vegetables, which makes it really unusual to look at.

I dont really like his work because it is very dark and dull and very unusual.I dislike the use of Vegtables, he could have used something else. But it is very unique.
